چکیده

The success of Autonomous Vehicle (AV) systems largely depends on fast alignment of their resources, to meet (and exceed) the actual (and perceived) requirements of the changing operational environment. A review of key literature applicable to AV practices and planning issues provides a short assessment of planning scenarios, highlighting their complexity, limitations and the possible scope for improvement through the use of decision support systems (DSSs). As a result, a framework is proposed for knowledge based DSSs for mission objectives of AVs, supporting both autonomous and cooperative learning between the vehicles and helping to improve the efficiency of the autonomous system. Anticipated benefits from this DSS model include: flexibility and interoperability in terms of supporting different architectures and ranges of autonomous systems with scope for reusing and maintaining the captured knowledge, learning from past events and sharing that knowledge in the future. The final section of this paper discusses further work and the next phases of our project research.

A multiple criteria decision support system for autonomous underwater vehicle mission planning and control

The growing use of autonomous air, surface, ground and underwater systems is continually demonstrating new military and commercial possibilities and applications. The state of the art in the planning and control of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) is largely precarious because AUVs provide infrequent feedback, operate autonomously for long periods of time and yet have little knowledge of t...

Using Multimodal Input for Autonomous Decision Making for Unmanned Systems

Autonomous decision making in the presence of uncertainly is a deeply studied problem space particularly in the area of autonomous systems operations for land, air, sea, and space vehicles. Various techniques ranging from single algorithm solutions to complex ensemble classifier systems have been utilized in a research context in solving mission critical flight decisions. Realized systems on ac...

Approximate dynamic programming with applications in multi-agent systems

This thesis presents the development and implementation of approximate dynamic programming methods used to manage multi-agent systems. The purpose of this thesis is to develop an architectural framework and theoretical methods that enable an autonomous mission system to manage real-time multi-agent operations. To meet this goal, we begin by discussing aspects of the real-time multi-agent missio...

Pilot Decision Support for Controlling Multiple UAVs

One challenge facing coordination and deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) today is the amount of human involvement needed to carry out a successful mission. Currently, control and coordination of UAVs typically involves multiple operators to control a single agent. The aim of this paper is to invert this relationship, enabling a single pilot to control and coordinate a group of UAVs. ...

A Mobile Robot Testbed for Prognostics-Enabled Autonomous Decision Making

The ability to utilize prognostic system health information in operational decision making, especially when fused with information about future operational, environmental, and mission requirements, is becoming desirable for both manned and unmanned aerospace vehicles. A vehicle capable of evaluating its own health state and making (or assisting the crew in making) decisions with respect to its ...
